Pilates - Matwork or Studio?
Pilates classes in Caterham: how to find the right one for you
If you have been thinking about starting Pilates classes in Caterham, the first thing to sort out is which class suits you. I keep it simple. There are two formats to choose from, Matwork Pilates and Studio Pilates, and both are a good place to begin. There is no wrong choice here. Pilates is for every body, whichever one you pick.
Mat Pilates: strong foundations you can take anywhere
Choose Mat if you want strong foundations and real core strength. You work with your own body on the mat, learning the movements from the ground up. You build strength from the inside, at your own pace. The bonus is that once you know it, you can practise anywhere, at home or in the garden. No kit needed, just you and a mat.
Mat is where a lot of people start, and it teaches you the control that everything else builds on.
Studio (includes Reformer Pilates): working with support of the apparatus and resistance of the springs
Choose Studio Pilates is you want to work with the apparatus, be that the Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair, Caddilac – there is much to choose from in a fully equipped studio. The Studio Apparatus is all different in its own right but also crosses over so we can train you around the studio as you progress in order to feel exercises differently to understand and feel them better. You may not achieve something on the Mat or the Reformer but you find you can do it on the Tower. The apparatus gives you both support and resistance. The support helps you find the right position, and the resistance gives your muscles something to work against, so the session feels connected and creates depth of work.
Do not let the apparatus intimidate you. It is there to help you, not to test you. It has a different feel from Mat and can help you achieve things maybe you thought you couldn’t.
